Animated trailer for the rock festival Backyard Rock 2018

The ever expanding party Backyard Bärs grew up to become the full fledged rock festival Backyard Rock and I made a trailer and a poster for the festival.

The idéa was to create an explosion of rock for the poster and somehow end up with the same image in an animated trailer.

The village pub

The village pub

Every village in the north of Sweden has a pizza place, restaurant or pub with the indoor comletely made out of pinewood, pizza stained metal cane chairs and flower pots covered with aluminium foil.

This is the type of place Pikku ends up on one of his dates.

Bridge over troubled water

Bridge over troubled water

The last act of the film takes place on a bridge where Pikku is conemplating suicide when he meets with a mysterious ghost bride. I built the bridge out of foamboard, finn board and iron rods.

i then covered it all in a mixture of acrylic paint and baking soda. The bridge will be visible for about 6 seconds in the film…

I am a rock

I am a rock

If you are going to drown yourself in the river, you will need a good rock. Pikku’d drowning rock is made of cardboard, lots of duct tape, advertisements, wallpaper glue, texture gel and acrylic paint.

I started by taping some cardboard together into a stone-like shape.

I then covered the card board “rock” with advertisements from  El-giganten, dipped in wall paper glue. I then left the rock on the radiator to dry for a few days.

When dry, I painted the rock with texture gel.

This step might not really be necessary, but it gave the rock a slightly more sand-like texture and I had the texture gel laying around.

Finally, I painted the rock with a few layers of acrylic paint to get a stone-like surface and tied a rope around it. Pikku is now ready to drown himself in the closest hole in the ice unless a ghost woman happens to stop him.

Arctic Light film 2017

Arctic light film 2017

Before any new updates on Who can love Pikku Iso? I am going to show a little bit of the work I did for the Arctic Light Film this year.

Animation?

alff 2018 animation alff 2018 animation

I started by creating a small animation based on last years character. Pretty soon I discovered that I really couldn’t get the results I was aiming for in the short amount of time I had to work on the animation. When I also was told that the poster I made based on that animation wouldn’t print well I went back to the drawing board.

Puppet?

Instead, I collected all leftover foam I could find in the studio and sculpted a face for a hand puppet. The face of the puppet I made from my son, Finn’s, old mattress which was much too thin to work as a face. But since there so few shots in the film I decided to make it work anyway.

I covered the foam in cloth cut from blankets that I bought at Rusta.

The eyes were made from hobby foam that I heated with a heat gun and formed over a ball. For the body, I used an old camping mat and the same shirt I used last year.Yuki crocheted a scarf just in time for the shoot despite having a fever and a terrible headache.

Poster and film

First I did the photography for the poster and then I continued with the shots for the film which I probably redid close to twenty times before I figured out the way the puppet should move.

alff 2018

The backgrounds are mostly reused sets from the Pikku Iso-film. The starry sky I had already created for the first animated attempt, and I could just lift it into this puppet film.

Finally, I animated some effects, like breath, particles, and flares using Light Wave 3D and After Effects.

Martin then made the sound and music for the film.

Opening film for Arctic Light Film Festival 2017

Arctic light film festival 2017 is here and and it’s time for another opener.

This year I started by making an animated film but changed my mind halfway through when I discovered that the animation didn’t really work the way I intended and the poster I made from that animation was not going to work out well in print.

Instead, I collected my thoughts and all the leftover foam I could find in the studio and built a hand puppet version of last years character. A few plaids from Rusta and a striped shirt later, the puppet was as good as done.

The backgrounds in the film are reused sets from Who can love Pikku Iso?, a short film I was working on at the same time.

Effects like the puppets breath and some other stuff were animated in Light Wave 3D and After Effects and finally, I put it all together in After Effects.

The film was shown before every screening at Folkets Hus (and the church) during the festival and you could also see it on the outdoor screens downtown during the festival.

The film is funded

The film is funded

After many trials and tribulations, the film about the Mahianen Pikku Iso is finally funded. The film will premiere sometime late next spring if everything goes according to plan.

The film is Co-produced by  Filmpool Nord, who has supported the project from the beginning, but also svt and TCB i Kiruna AB with support from Region Norrbotten, Längmanska kulturfonden  and Svenska Filminstitutet.

Now is the start of an intensive period to finish the sets, costumes, and props before filming that will start in middle or late December. Composition and other work are planned to start at the beginning of the new year and my goal is to continue to update the production diary during all of this with at least a post every two weeks. If you are interested you can also follow bortbyting at Twitter where I post behind the scenes shots almost daily.

Autumn is here!

Autumn is here

It might seem like productivity has been kind of low since the middle of March, but the truth is that the work done during the spring and summer has been either a little bit secret or too boring to share.

Many papers have been produced but the end of my contribution to deforestation is near, as Who can love Pikku Iso? is almost financed. I have also been working with Martin Eriksson on a new/old project. A film that was never completed and has gone through a facelift and a considerable extension. I hope for it to premiere around new years.

During the spring, I have also contributed a few pictures to the art/multimedia exhibition by Johan Sandström and Tommy Jensen of  Organizing rocks. This exhibition is currently on display at the city library in Luleå.

Cut-out animated commercials for the Kiruna Festival ’17

For the 2017 edition of the Kiruna festival, the idéa was to create a cut-out animated film where the bumble bee flies past flowers revealing the musicians that will perform at this year’s festival.

The bumble bee was animated on the computer for the most part, while backgrounds were made as a mix of paper and computer graphics.

For each release, there was a short film revealing the artist, and then there was a longer film with all of the main acts and I was also responsible for the design.

The music, the same as last 2016, was written and performed by Martin Eriksson at TCB i Kiruna AB.
